A mottled red sandstone head of Avalokiteshvara
India, Uttar Pradesh, Mathura period, 3rd/4th century
Finely carved with heavy-lidded eyes centered by an urna, his chignon secured with a circlet with devotional figures at either side and topped by a crown with a row of Garuda figures surmounted by Amitabha flanked by adorants
6 1/8 in. (15.5 cm.) high
