Château Haut-Brion--Vintage 1959
Pessac (Graves), 1er cru classé
Original tissues. All very slightly damaged labels. Levels: one 3cms, two 4.5cms below base of corks
Tasting note: Thanks to the vineyard's deep Graves gravel, the wine is distinctively different to its peers further north in the Médoc in appearance, nose and taste - yet also has elegance and finesse. Its nose is very distinctive, tobacco-like, earthy fragrance, surging out of the glass; full of fruit yet concentrated. Most recently: a wonderful gradation of colour showing age but sweet and mellow, with a lovely edge of honeycombe scent after an hour in the glass. A positive sweet entry, soft yet assertive. Above all, harmonious. Last tasted June 2000 ***** M.B.
