A TWELVE-PANEL COROMANDEL LACQUER SCREEN
18TH CENTURY
Carved through a brown ground and picked out in a full range of colors with a scene of Guo Ziyi seated in the main hall of his home receiving greetings from family and well-wishers, elsewhere in the compound family members and servants are engaged in a host of other activities, outside musicians play to welcome arriving guests, the entire scene framed with a border of antiques and vessels filled with various flowers, with a dedicatory inscription by Zhang Guotai and two seals reading Zhang Guotai and Ning yin, the reverse with a scene of a lotus pond surrounded by fantastic rocks, flowering plants, bamboo and pairs of birds, all between end-panels depicting dragons and qilin, the top of each panel with fan-shaped landscape cartouche, the bottom with mythical beasts
