The top of the cover inlaid in mother-of-pearl, hardstone and horn with an unusual scene of two foreign merchants, one leading an angry-looking monkey by a silver wire rope, the other with demon-like face carrying a staff hung with a double-gourd flask, with rocks in the foreground and clouds above, the interior fitted with a removable tray
