Carved on one side with two characters in seal script reading cong de, the reverse carved with the same characters in Manchu script, all set within a border surrounded by two openwork, confronted archaistic kui dragons, the stone of even white tone

Lot Essay

The characters cong de are probably a reference to the Confucian code, san cong si de, 'Three Obediences and Four Virtues', that governed the behavior of women in imperial China.
