A LARGE WELL-CARVED PALE GREENISH-WHITE JADE SNUFF BOTTLE
SUZHOU, 1740-1860
Carved on one main side with three figures on a rocky ledge by a rushing stream, the rocks extending to the other side where the remnants of russet skin is used as a highlight, the stone of even tone with soft, attractive polish, turquoise stopper
2 7/8 in. (7.3 cm.) high

Lot Essay

Since one of the figures is a monk, the group may represent the poet Su Dongpo, painter Huang Tingjian and the monk Foyin. The three are known to have taken a boat trip to the Red Cliff one evening.
