A RARE POLYCHROME LACQUER CIRCULAR NECKLACE CASE
WANLI PERIOD (1573-1619)
Decorated in the tianqi technique, the rounded top and bottom engraved with peony scroll bearing seven large blossoms in red, ochre and green lacquer, with narrow key-fret borders at the rims, the engraved lines filled with gilding, the interior covered in ochre lacquer, with ruyi-shaped metal clasp and hinge
7¾ in. (19.2 cm.) diam.
Provenance
Acquired in Hong Kong in the 1950s, and thence by descent within the family.

Lot Essay

Necklace cases made of lacquer appear to be quite rare. However, examples in cloisonné of this same form are known. Compare the example sold in these rooms, 16-17 September 2010, lot 1031, where it was dated 17th century.
