Lot Essay
This finely woven Ushak medallion carpet is one of very few, possibly only two, which have three complete medallions in the field. On the present carpet this has been achieved by the compressing of the secondary green medallions. One other, from the collection of Sir Sidney Nolan, was sold in these Rooms 29 April 1993, lot 328. Each of these two carpets has coloured the central medallion differently from the two end medallions, thereby enhancing it. Here it is the yellow outline of the central quatrefoil that makes it stand out; in the Nolan carpet the centre of the quatrefoil is coloured red.
The finesse of weave, the choice of minor guard stripe, and the variety of colour all point to an early date for this carpet, very possibly in the late 16th century, and certainly no later than the early 17th.
