TWO CELEBRATED AND CLOSELY-LINKED ARCHAEOLOGICAL WORKS IN ONE VOLUME, both with text by Wood, a classical historian. Accompanying Wood on his journey to the East were the Italian architect, Giovanni Battista Borra, and James Dawkins and John Bouverie, the creators of the surveying project. The party reached Palmyra in the spring of 1751, and spent some five days there before moving on to Baalbek, where a further eight days went into drawing, measuring and making notes on the ruins. Dawkins is thought to have spent £50,000 on the two magnificent publications that resulted. Berlin Cat 1884 & 1887; Cohen-de Ricci 916; Fowler 443 & 444; Harris 939 & 936; Millard II, 92; RIBA 3707 & 3706.
