A French watchmaker, Bernard Guillaume Carcel (1750-1818) patented an ingenious oil lamp in 1800 which used a clockwork mechanism to deliver a continuous supply of oil to the burner. It could be operated unattended, could be used to the last drop of oil and operate for sixteen hours without refilling.
