A LARGE KHORASSAN SILVER AND COPPER INLAID BRASS BASIN
NORTH EAST IRAN, 12TH CENTURY
The flat base with rounded sides recurving to the flaring sixteen-sided cusped rim, the centre with a roundel of intricate interlacing strapwork issuing from a central six-pointed star and with elegant rabbit-head terminals, around this a band of silver-inlaid naskh on a ground of scrolls, two interlacing cusped bands around this issuing alternating copper and silver-inlaid drop-shapes, the rim with a further band of silver-inlaid naskh interrupted by roundels containing flowerheads, the sides with four, probably later engraved, palmettes, restoration to base, areas of corrosion, considerable inlay remaining

The inscriptions on this basin are as follows:
Around the central medallion is what is probably a repat of the word al-ta[ma], 'entirety'.
Around the rim, al-'izz wa'l-baqa wa'l-dawla wa'l-thana wa'l-n'ima, 'glory and long life and wealth and praise and [God's] grace' and repeated al-'afiya wa'l-tama, 'health and entirety'.
