Of rectangular form, the white ground decorated in cobalt-blue, green and bole-red with a reciprocal design of bold green and white trefoil palmettes each filled with arabesques or cartouches, repaired breaks, slightly reduced in size

Lot Essay

Tiles of this design form the upper border in the interior of the tomb of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent in the grounds of the Süleymaniye complex in Istanbul (illustrated in Walter Denny, Gardens of Paradise, 16th Century Turkish Ceramic Tile Decoration, Turkey, 1998, pp.65-68).
