OTTOMAN TURKEY, CIRCA 17TH CENTURY
Possibly from the tomb of the Prophet Muhammad, the dark brown ground divided by horizontal chevrons into a series of major and minor bands of gold inscriptions in vigorous muhaqqaq, the upper band with the calligraphy in small roundels, the lower band with the bismallah within elegant cusped cartouches, complete loom's width, backed, areas of fraying

Lot Essay

The calligraphic roundels and the larger rectangular inscription cartouches are unusual in an early Ottoman silk panel. For an example of a calligraphic lampas panel on a similar colour see J.M.
