Ottoman Turkish manuscript on paper, 14ff. plus 2 fly-leaves, the first 6ff. with 23ll. of small black naskh below a title in larger gold naskh with red and gold floral illumination, text within gold outlined panels, important words and phrases picked out in gold, gold and polychrome verse roundels, the following 8ff. with text arranged in a table with gold intercolumnar and interlinear rules, headings in a variety of colours including blue, green, orange, red and gold, in brown morocco with flap and decorated gilt borders and brown cloth doublures with stamped arabesque decoration

Lot Essay

This horoscope is for the year starting Ramadan AH 1275 (April 1859 AD). It was drawn up on Pazartesi 16th Sha'ban (Monday 21st March 1859) at two minutes past 11 o'clock in the evening, by Abdülmecid's cheif astrologer, Osman Saib, and his assistants. Prognostications are given for the Sultan, the Grand Vizier, the Sheikh al-Islam, the army, the department of waqf, courtiers and the nobility, the common people, the weather, war and prices.

Osman Saib was the imperial astrologer and the author of a treatise on astrology, Ta'lim ül-Kürei, which was published in Istanbul in 1848 and 1850.
