Lot Essay
This large ceremonial Kris handle originates from a smaller prototype also in ivory and termed a 'cockatoo' or bird head type, (A. C. Tirri, Islamic Weapons- Maghrib to Moghul, Miami, 2003, pl.308, p. 438). Due to the impressive size of this Kris handle, it has been suggested that it played an important role in ceremonial occasions as a symbol of power. For a discussion on the Kris, see Fong Peng Khuan (ed.), Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia Kuala Lumpur, 2002, Vol. I, p. 177.
