ISLAMIC ART FROM THE COLLECTION OF DR. MOHAMMED SAID FARSI
Born in the South West Quarter of Mecca on 7 January 1935, Farsi left home in 1956 to study in Egypt where he obtained his BA and later received a PhD in Architecture and Town Planning from the University of Alexandria. Farsi returned to Saudi Arabia to work in the Bureau of Town Planning of the Western District. He became Mayor of Jeddah in 1982. On his resignation from public office in 1986, Dr. Farsi focused his energy on research and wrote a series of essays on art history and architecture that were collected in 1989 and published as The Story of Art in Jeddah.
Dr. Mohammed Said Farsi is one of the Middle East's great modern patrons of the visual arts. For a long time he was a driving force in the Egyptian art scene and is the only collector of Modern Egyptian Art to have systematically documented the works in his collection. The Farsi Collection of Egyptian Art was sold in Christie's Dubai on 27 April and 26 October 2010, achieving a number of record prices for Modern Arab art.
Dr. Mohammed Said Farsi collected classical Islamic Art at the same time as he formed his collection of Egyptian art, rapidly allowing his interests to spread over a much broader spectrum. On 5 October 2010, fifty masterpieces of Islamic art from the collection of Dr. Mohammed Said Farsi were sold at Christie's, King street which achieved impressive results, particularly for The Farsi Indian Treasures. We are delighted to be able to offer this new selection of fifty works of classical Islamic art from his collection.
