RAYMOND-LAFON
Château Raymond-Lafon has long been considered one of the best producers in the Sauternes appellation, though the property's greatest wines have been produced since Francine and Pierre Meslier purchased the estate in 1972. Following the Yquem blueprint for the highly specialized cultivation and handling of grapes blessed with the noble rot (botrytis-cinerea), Meslier set out to match Yquem in quality. Perhaps the author/Decanter columnist Andrew Jefford sums up the results best in his book The New France: "it sits underneath Yquem; its average yield is the same as Yquem; it is made in the same way as Yquem. The message, in other words, is clear: although hard to find, this is one of the greatest of all Sauternes." Today, Château Raymond-Lafon is run by Francine and Pierre's three children: Marie-Franoise (Château Director), Charles-Henri (Winemaker), and Jean-Pierre (Export Manager).
A series of 60 imperiales was created by Raymond Lafon starting with the 1985 vintage. Each imperial has its own numbered label. Each imperial contains the harvest from 65 vines, each plant producing one glass of wine. Here is a rare opportunity to acquire 6 of the legendary imperials from an extraordinary cellar.
