Lot Essay

This shape is known from the early Dynasty I in Egypt, though it is more commonly found in alabaster. Towards late Dynasty I and early Dynasty II, this shape is found in other stones. It has been suggested that the exceptional quality and choice of stone could mean that this vessel was destined for use in a royal tomb. For similar Early Dynastic vessels, cf., A. J. Spencer, Catalogue of Egyptian Antiquities in the British Museum. Early Dynastic Objects, vol. V, London 1980.
