The nude hero standing with weight on right leg, left leg bent at knee, the skin of the Nemean lion worn over his head and tied around his neck, the legs and tail draped over his left arm, presenting the apples of the Hesperides in his extended left hand, the raised right arm probably once brandishing his club, mounted
5¾ in. (14.5 cm.) high
Provenance
Collection of M. Henri Rouart (1833-1912), Paris, France. A wealthy engineer and amateur painter, Rouart trained under Millet and Corot and was a close friend of Degas and Manet. His collection included Impressionist and Asian art, and Antiquities.
Thence by descent to the present owner.
