Lot Essay

This head resembles portraits of Clodius Albinus (150-197 A.D.), an African from Hadrumentum, who became Governor of Britain and later shared consulship with Septimius Severus in 194 A.D. Cf. G.B. Waywell, The Lever and Hope Sculptures, Berlin 1986, no. 55.
