A VICTORIAN SILVER AND HARDSTONE CANE
MORNING SESSION THURSDAY, 14 APRIL 2011 AT 10:00 AM (LOTS 1-176) While the collecting of antique canes is a worldwide activity, one rarely sees such an abundance of the finest examples come to the salerooms all at once. This extraordinary collection, formed by Robert Pearson of Dallas, represents the collector's passion for items of great quality and decorative beauty. Working with the leading dealers in Europe and America over the past two decades, Mr. Pearson has focused on canes that exemplify the highest degree of craftsmanship and artistry in this fascinating collecting field. Whether made of porcelain, precious metals, ivory or semi-precious stones, each cane in the Pearson Collection makes its own dramatic statement. This is certainly true of the French Hardstone-Mounted Gilt Bronze Cane, stamped Falize. This fantastic creation-with its insects, leaves, stems, tendrils and blossoms--came from the house of Falize, Parisian jewelers and goldsmiths founded around 1840 but little remembered today. Jeweled canes from Boucheron, Tiffany, Faberge and Cartier also highlight the collection. With the publication of a book on his collection in 2009, this sale now marks the end of a collecting journey that, throughout, emphasized quality over quantity.
