Lot Essay
'The Five Senses' in its original five panel oil painting form was a chief attraction at Austrian Galleries in The Art Palace (room 36) of the Chicago World's Columbian Exhibition of 1893 (vol. II, p. 43). See The Greenfield Collection, Christie's, New York, 20 October 2008, back end pages for an illustration of the subject en situ. In the same catalogue also see lot 38 for a comparative example on porcelain. In reaction to Anthony Cromstock's proscribed suppression of vice and in particular to his politicized reaction against the works of Makart, visitors flocked to the galleries to see if they agreed with his moral opposition to its display.
Hans Makart, Salzburg (1840-1884), was a pupil of Piloty in Munich and afterwards studied in Rome. At the age of 27, he won great acclaim at the Paris Universelle Exposition. In 1869 he settled at Vienna, and quickly became a favorite at the Viennese court. Known as the 'The Austrian Rubens', he won fame as the 'Prince of Taste', even governing ladies' fashion. One of Makart's greatest achievements was staging the vast costumed parades held to celebrate the Silver Wedding Anniversary of Franz Joseph and Empress Elizabeth, 1879.
