Lot Essay

The charming carving on the stretcher of this console is derived from the celebrated picture by Jean-Baptiste Oudry, The Boar Hunt, which, with its companion The Stag Hunt, formed a part of a series of paintings by Oudry on hunting themes, painted in 1722-5 and engraved soon after (see M.L. Dimier, Les Peintres Français au XVIIIe Siècle, Paris, 1930, fig. 27). A similar console of larger proportions and with richer carving that is more closely related to Oudry's paintings was sold anonymously at Christie's, London, 16 December 1999, lot 65 (£65,300).
