Lot Essay

These commodes are nearly identical in design to a green-japanned dressing commode supplied by Thomas Chippendale to Harewood House for the Chintz Bedroom, c. 1769-70 (see C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, London, 1978, vol. II, p. 122, pl. 216).
