Untitled (1968-69) is an early example of Polke's photography. The image is simplistic, though intriguing in a disorientating and surrealistic manner: a black table, throwing multiple diverging shadows, leaning against a wall with four small white balls positioned on top of the table at each of its corners. The documenting character of the image is undermined by the apparent displacement of the object and the layering of physical and illusory space. Polke, who is one of the most versatile German artists, explored a multitude of materials, styles and techniques. He was keen to explore photography as this allowed him to experiment with printing techniques, exposure times and photochemistry, incorporating mistakes and elements of chance into his practice.
