This work depicts the leopard as Lewis experiences them. To him, these secretive creatures are always seen either emerging or disappearing, and seldom in posed silhouette. In this instance, the weight of the composition places emphasis on and draws focus to the leopard's extended fore-paw, enhancing the drama of the powerful stride. The sense of power is extended all the way from the paw into the shoulders, conveying the animal's tremendous strength. Interestingly, the paw itself appears very strong and yet very soft at the same time. The tension between the animal's strength and the physical softness of its body is a paradox that intrigues Lewis.
