Although it depicts a predator in repose, there is a definite sense of alertness beneath Sitting Cheetah II's calm exterior, notably in the twist of the head and the flick of the tail. This underlying tension is emphasised by the deeply incised textures, which have an almost brutal quality that furthers the sense of threat posed by even the seemingly relaxed animal. This expressionist treatment of texture is common to several of Lewis's later works.
