Lot Essay

It is extremely rare to find a carving of this large size in this material and from this date.
Tourmaline is generally seen in the form of snuff bottles, pendants and court necklaces.
The present lot illustrates the diverse tones and contrasts that can be seen in tourmaline, in this case starting with the attractive pinkish purple tone rising to the deep emerald green at the top.
