The inscription on top of the barrel reads:
Guangxu yuan nian Jin Ling ji qi ju zhi zao, which may be translated as 'Made in Jin Ling Arsenal in the first year of Guangxu (1875)'.
The establishment of arsenals in China during the second half of the 19th century, such as the Jin Ling (Nanjing) Arsenal, was spearheaded by government official Li Hongzhang in the 4th year of Tongzhi, 1865. These projects were part of a larger effort to modernize China's military technology in what was called 'The Self-Strengthening Movement' (1861-1895). For further information see Harold M.
