A FINE LARGE MING-STYLE BLUE AND WHITE VASE, HU
QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-95)
Delicately painted around the lower body with two pairs of long-bodied archaistic phoenix, each pair separated by a large lotus bloom supported on meandering leafy scrolls and bearing secondary blooms, all between a ruyi border at the top and a band of overlapping petals at the base, the shoulder with a wide band enclosing further lotus blooms borne on leafy scrolls and below a band of classic scrolls, the tall flaring neck with a band of stylised scrolls issuing from a central bloom, applied on either side with finely moulded 'phoenix' handles, the short splayed foot with a band of pendant stiff leaves

Lot Essay

Acquired in Macau in the 1930s by a promiment Portuguese doctor, who was an avid collector of Chinese porcelain and works of art and thence by descent to the current owner.
