Enamelled all over in fine detail with forty different famous heroic figures with their respective descriptive texts, between pink and blue borders of peony blooms on a yellow ground of blue stylised archaistic dragons, the interior glazed turqouise and the base unglazed

Lot Essay

The descriptive tests are taken from the illustrated manual Wu shuang pu compiled by Jin Gu Liang during the mid-17th century. A pair of considerably smaller bottle vases (7 in. high) with two figures and their corresponding descriptive texts from Wu shuang pu was sold in our South Kensington Rooms, 11 May 2010, lot 178.
