Lot Essay

With Breguet Certificate dated 14 April 1991 and copy of the registers confirming the sale of the present anti-magnetic "montre de torpilleur" or torpedo watch with First Class Rating Certificate from the Besançon Observatory to the Marine's Hydrographic Service on 28 August 1939 for the amount of Francs 3,245.

Its movement is stamped with the "Viper's Head", the symbol used by the Besançon Observatory to mark movements which had successfully passed the chronometer tests.

When offered at the Art of Breguet Auction in 1991, the dial featured the later painted number "4054" underneath the signature which had been removed by the present owner. He furthermore added a custom-made glazed cuvette in order to view the movement. The original metal snap on cuvette will be delivered with the watch.
