Known as "manta ray" because of the distinctive case shape with triangular pectoral 'wings', resembling the largest species of the rays, it is doubtlessly one of the most cutting edge designs of 1950s watchmaking. The streamline shape, highly unusual for the period, served as inspiration for the celebrated ref. 5100 "10 Days" watch launched in 2000 (see lots 394 & 395).

With Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present watch in 1956 and its subsequent sale on 31 August 1957.
To the best of our knowledge, this "Manta Ray" has never been offered at auction before. Preserved in very good, original overall condition it is furthermore believed to be the only fourth example of a reference 2554 in pink gold to appear in public to date.
