Pour une paire de dessous de bouteille du même service, voir vente Christie's Genève, 17 novembre 1998, lot 163.

Ce service commandé par le Grand Duc Michael, frère du tsar Alexandre Ier, fut exécuté par les plus grands orfèvres français de l'époque: Martin-Guillaume Biennais et Jean-Charles Cahier qui reprit l'atelier du premier à sa retraite. Il a été fabriqué probablement pour orner le palais Michaelovsky (maintenant musée Russe), construit à St Petersbourg entre 1819 et 1823 et au décor néoclassique.
