The openwork backplate with multicolored champlevé enamel, the center mounted with a high collet-set red gemstone surrounded by radiating gold flower heads, six baroque pearls, and two garnets, all set against later gold flowerheads, the reverse intricately enameled in blue, green and white cloisonné enamel, three pendant pearls below, apparently unmarked

Lot Essay

The design for this pendant is possibly based on the designs of Daniel Mignot, published in Augsburg in 1596. See Anna Somers Cocks and Charles Truman, Renaissance Jewels, Gold Boxes, and Objets de Vertu, 1984, p. 96 and Yvonne Hackenbroch, Renaissance Jewellery, 1979, pp. 178-181.
