The bowl shaped octagonal on a conforming stepped foot, with two ring handles, the body engraved with an inscription, marked under base and on handle, the bowl also marked 16711/4144

Lot Essay

The engraved inscription, taken from the Epistles of Horace, reads "FOECUNDI.CALICES.QUEM NON.FECERE.DISERTUM." Another trophy bowl with the same inscription sold in these Rooms, 18-19 January 2002, lot 215.
