The base is engraved: To GEORGE. F. BAKER ESQ. 1880 TO 1900 In grateful recognition of his many years services as President of the LONG BRANCH WATER SUPPLY COMPANY
George Fisher Baker (1840-1912) was co-founder, president, chairman and largest shareholder of First National Bank (now Citibank) and was heavily invested in utilities, railroads, and the steel and rubber industries. Baker's philanthropy was widespread. He supplied the initial funding for Harvard Business School, Columbia's athletic field and the Baker Memorial Library at Dartmouth.
This silver and copper vase belongs to an eclectic group of mixed-metal silver produced by Tiffany & Co., circa 1900, under the artistic direction of Paulding Farnham. Farnham's designs were inspired by myriad cultures and these vessels drew from sources as diverse as Greek kraters, Native American baskets and Japanese metalwork (see: John Loring, Magnificent Tiffany Silver, 2001, pp. 21-214 and Sotheby's, New York, 21 January 2011, lot 114).
