Of conventional form, painted in blue with the crowned initals C·R above the inscription Wh:WINE and the date 1644 (drilled to base, footrim chip, minor glaze chipping and crazing)

Lot Essay

This wine-bottle is not recorded by Lipski and Archer, however a similar claret bottle dated 1649, one of two with this date in the Burnap Collection is recorded, see Louis L. Lipski and Michael Archer, Dated English Delftware, London, 1984, pp. 326-327, no. 1391.

A manganese ground initialled royalist wine-bottle from the Hon. Simon Sainsbury Collection, was sold in these Rooms, Simon Sainsbury, The Creation of An English Arcadia, 18 June 2008, lot 73.
