Lot Essay

The graphic source for the present lot is probably an engraving by Cornelius van Dalen, included as the frontispiece of J. Nalson's 'Journal for...the Tryal of K. Charles I' published in 1684 depiciting Charles I entering Edinburgh, perhaps when he was in Scotland in 1641. The design seems to have been adapted for dishes representing Charles II, James II and William III.
