The hinged cover with an oval scene of a shepherd boy playing a flute to his goats, the top with a floral decoration, the sides with swans, foliate scrolls and doves, the front with five small oval scenes, with a blue velvet-lined interior, the velvet-lined underside with gilt stamp 'C.ROCCHEGGIANI, ROMA'

Lot Essay

A member of a well-known family of Roman mosaicists, Cesare Roccheggiani was active at the Vatican Mosaic Workshop from 1856 to 1864, before establishing his own independent atelier at 125, via Babuino, and then at 14-15 via Condotti, both near the Piazza di Spagna.
