Lot Essay

The sitter was Imperial Ambassador in Paris between 1755 and 1766 and was raised to the rank of Imperial Prince in 1765. For Roslin's three- quarter length original of 1762 in which the sitter is shown holding a letter in his left hand, see G. W. Lundberg, 'Roslin Live och Verk', 1957, III, number 159, page 33-34, and I, figure 75.
