Château d'Yquem--Vintage 1967
Sauternes, 1er grand cru classé
Bin-soiled labels. Levels: four top and one just below top-shoulder
Tasting note: I have been fortunate enough to taste this wine on over 50 occasions since the Spring of 1973. Though never less than lovely, I have noted infinite variations of colour and taste, the former from mid-gold to deeper 'burnished gold', partly due to the ageing progress. Its bouquet I have variously described as 'ambrosial', 'mint and muscat', 'orange blossom, lime blossom and ripe peaches', and, like all great wines, it unravels and displays extra dimensions. Always sweet of course and, though rich and ripe, with a welcome element of finesse. In June 2003, a vertical at Yquem, all recorked. The '67 deepest of the younger vintages: orange amber with pure orange and gold highlights' sweet; harmonious, honeyed, peach-blossom fragrance; rich yet crisp, assertive, fairly sweet but (after the '76) appeared to be drying out. Very good acidity. Most recently: medium-gold; lovely, classic, crème brulée bouquet; sweet, glorious flavour. ***** M.B. (June 2005)
