HARRISON ANSWERS A PLEA TO KEEP AMERICAN JOBS FROM GOING OVERSEAS

"I have your letter of the 13th last," Harrison tells Arkell, publisher of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, "and notice what you say about the Alaska Fur Company sending the seal skins to England to be dressed when the work can be done in this country. The law does not vest me with any duty or discretion in the matter & I do not think it would authorize Mr. Windom to exact any condition from a bidder in that direction. I will call your suggestion to his attention." On 13 January Arkell wrote to Harrison that "the Republican Party...should not permit this work to be taken from the hands of American working men when it can be proved that they are just as competent as English workmen...I submit this matter to your serious judgment." A Fine Presidential ALS touching on American trade in the future 49th state.
