[FRANKLIN PRINTING] Seven issues of The Pennsylvania Gazette, 2 November 1749, No. 1090; 12 December 1749, No. 1096; 19 December 1749, No. 1097; 26 December 1749, No. 1098; 14 June 1750, No. 1122; 8 October 1761, No. 1711; 24 November 1763, No. 1822. All Philadelphia: B. Franklin, Postmaster and D. Hall. Together 28 pages, folio, some age-toned and stained.
INDIAN THREATS, JEWISH REFUGEES, TROUBLE IN CORSICA. The columns of Franklin's and Hall's influential paper are a rich historical source on both regional and world events. A letter from the Philadelphia Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends, asks the governor's assistance in meeting the threat from hostile Indians on the western frontier (24 Nov. 1763). The small notices for runaway servants and slaves throughout all these issues tell much about the social history of the colony. But international events make their appearance too, such as the news from Lisbon in the 14 June 1750 issue, about a group of Jews who escaped the Portuguese inquisition by fleeing to London. Other items of note deal with the French and Indian threat on the Massachusetts frontier (19 Dec. 1749); troubles in Corsica and Turkey (2 Nov. 1749); the Act of Parliament selling lands belonging to the Pennsylvania Land Company (8 Oct. 1761); and a murder on the Isle of Guernsey (26 Dec. 1749). Evans 6399, 6584, 8973, 9478; Miller 479, 510, 755, 788. (7)
