Lot Essay

Lustred Cafaggiolo wares are very rare, and as some pieces bear a strong resemblance to Deruta it is thought that the technique of lustering could have been introduced at Cafaggiolo by a potter from Deruta. The precise dating of lustred Cafaggiolo pieces remains uncertain. See D. Thornton and T. Wilson, Italian Renaissance Ceramics, A Catalogue of the British Museum Collection, London, 2009, Vol. I, pp. 186-187, no. 119 and p. 192, no. 122 for the two lustred pieces in the British Museum, and p. 187, note 1 for a list of other known lustred examples including the present lot.
