Lot Essay

Pierre et Gilles as artists exist only for others; to share with them, and through them to extent the proportions of their artistic existence. The more they get to merge with their work, the more accurately portrayed they are; either in the wide range of their models' personalities _ as if they were a reflection of Pierre et Gilles's interests and facets as creators; or in the aesthetic singularity of the elaborated scenarios they create for each of their models; or in all of the subject matter they make reference to in their oeuvre.

Hence their frame of reference is so ample and complex, including multiple cultural concepts; from the most evident and immediate ones _ such as music, cinema, and publicity _ to those which, from another less skillful perspective, would be considered as an opposition; if not an alteration of their original meaning. Rather Pierre et Gilles are known for finding accordance and empathy among disparate notions such as pornography and religion, eroticism and socio-political commentaries: and incorporating them into their art.
