By family tradition, Major General Richard Crewe (1749-1814) and his wife Millborough, née Allpress, daughter of Samuel Allpress, the present sitter.

His cousin, Lieutenant Colonel Gerald Ross-Thompson.

Samuel Allpress lived in Jamaica and was a sugar plantation owner. He sat in the Jamaica Assembly as one of the members for Vere and later had a seat on the island's Royal Council. Portraits of Samuel Allpress and his wife by Francis Cotes, R.A. were sold Sotheby's, London, 25 November 1998, lot 46. Their daughter married Major General Richard Crewe (1749-1814), son of 1st Baron Crewe of Crewe Hall, Cheshire.
