Ercole III Rinaldo of Este, Duke of Modena, Reggio and Mirandola 1780-1803, Duke of Breisgau in 1801, married Princess Maria-Teresa of Cybo-Malaspina, the heiress of Massa and Carrara, in 1741. He participated in the war against Revolutionary France in 1793, was deposited by Napoleon in 1796 and abdicated in 1803 in favour of his son-in-law Archduke Ferdinand of Habsburg; his only daughter and heiress, Maria Beatrice, had been married to the fourth son of Holy Roman Empress Maria-Theresia since 1771.
