A VINCENNES BLEU CELESTE JUG (BROC ORDINAIRE)
1754-55, BLUE INTERLACED L'S ENCLOSING DATE LETTER B, INCISED 4 AND d.
Of pear-shaped form, painted with two birds in a landscape vignette within a shaped cartouche edged in gilt with palm branches entwined with flowering foliage and with scrolls, the ground beneath the lower part of the handle with a garland of gilt trailing flowers, the upper part of the jug with a gilt cartouche of scrolls and dots beneath the spout, the scroll handle enriched with gilding (section of rim restored at back)

Lot Essay

By 1752 this form was produced in four sizes of which the present jug is the second size. Between 1752 and 1760 about 29 examples were produced costing between 48 livres for a jug with flowers to 168 livres for an example with a blue-ground and gilding. A bleu lapis example of this size painted with birds from the Houghton Collection was sold by Christie's, London, 8 December 1994, lot 42.
