This plate is from a service given by Louis XVI to Queen Marie Caroline, wife of Ferdinand IV, King of Naples and Sicily, on the occasion of the baptism of their second daughter, Princess Luisa Maria Amelia Teresa. Queen Marie Caroline was known as Charlotte-Louise in France. The service was accompanied by thirty-nine white biscuit figures. The majority of the service was at Holland House, Kensington, London, in the 19th century and a large part subsequently sold in 1898 at Christie's. See 'Versailles et Les Tables Royale en Europe', Château Versailles, Exhibition Catalogue, 3 November 1993-27 February 1994, p. 338.
The service was recorded in the Etat des Présents in the Sèvres Archives on 4 December 1773 and the Princess was baptised on 1 February 1774. Several pieces of this service are marked with date letter U (for 1773) resembling V. The date letter is very similar to that on a plate from this service in the Collection of Charles Otto-Zieseniss, sold Christie's, Paris, 5-6, lot 239. For a full discussion of this service see David Peters, Sèvres Plates and Services of the 18th Century, Vol. II, Little Berkhamsted, 2005, pp. 495-498.
